CRANBERRY AREA

Residents of the Cranberry Lake area of the Powell River region love the slow paced life.  They love it so much that often they resist any change that could speed their lives up even a little bit and a lot of people looking for a less hectic lifestyle find this refreshing.  Sometimes it’s good to go back to a simpler life.  After all, who doesn’t dream of finding a pretty piece of nature to call your home?

THE HISTORY OF POWELL RIVER

It was the original home of the Sliammon First Nation until the European settlers took over.  Now the region is known as Powell Lake and the area’s original logging industry site. The entire Powell River region is thought to have housed somewhere around twenty thousand of the Sliammon First Nation’s people.

The actual Powell River was founded by Doctor Israel Powell in 1881.  At the time, Doctor Powell was the superintendent for Indian Affairs for the British Columbian province of Canada and he named the river after himself and then declared that it was the second shortest river in the world.  While the area was founded in 1881, it didn’t really start to grow as a community until the early 1900s.  That’s when logging was introduced to the region.  A residential area started to spring up because of the industry.

Now its major industry is tourism.  The Powell River area promises visitors and locals a great time in the great outdoors.  The area can boast great fishing, hiking, biking and beach areas as well as Powell Lake where visitors can spot Ospreys and Eagles and take part in a lot of different and fun water activities.  There is also shopping and lodging for visitors looking to make the Powell River region their vacation spot of choice.  The year round mild weather has earned the region the nickname “Sunshine Coast.”

CRANBERRY LAKE

The area of the Powell Lake region known as Cranberry Lake offers residents a more rural living situation.  The lots offer more acreage and residents work hard to keep their lifestyles from changing.  This has resulted in less economic growth than in other regions.

Cranberry Lake itself is located within the city borders of the aptly named “Cranberry Lake” which makes for easy access.  You can fish for Cutthroat Trout from March until July and Cranberry Lake is a bird sanctuary so wildlife enthusiasts will have a great time hiking its surroundings.  The lake doesn’t allow powerboats but canoes can be launched at the Linsay Park area of the lake. Nearby are Valentine Mountain, Vancouver Island, and Mowat and Haywire Bays.

Currently underway is the Cranberry Lake Clean Up Project.  The Cranberry Lake Clean Up Project is a project whose objective is to cut down on a strain of exotic water lily whose over population of Cranberry Lake has become hazardous to the lake’s health.  The water lilies are choking out other vegetation and endangering the salmon population of the lake.  The project is taking the lily pads out of Cranberry Lake and cleaning them and then they are returning them to the lake for use.
