SOUTH OF POWELL RIVER

Powell River was founded in 1881 by Doctor Israel Wood Powell.  Doctor Israel Wood Powell also declared that Powell River was the second shortest river in the world. In spite of its small stature, Powell River quickly became the location of the largest lumber production on the Canada’s West Coast.  Powell River was the home of the first pulp and paper mill in not just British Columbia but in all of Western Canada.  It was also the largest pulp and paper mill in the entire world.

The first town to spring up on the Powell River is now called “Townsite.”  Westview, Heritage Townsite, Cranberry Lake and Wildwood make up the four major communities in the area and the region is known as the Corporation of the District of Powell River.  On the map you’ll find Powell River is on the upper “Sunshine Coast” of British Columbia in Canada.  It’s on the mainland of British Columbia and is directly across the water from Courtenay of Vancouver Island. 

Powell River has a population of thirteen thousand people and its major industries are tourism, forestry, mining and fishing.  Secondary industries that contribute to the local economy include arts, culture, health care, education and mariculture.

Tourism is the major industry of Powell River.  Because of its great location, Powell River is the location of choice for hikers, bikers (both motorcycle and bicycle), fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts.  You can go to Powell River and lie on the beach, swim in the ocean (nearby are the warmest Pacific waters north of Mexico) or you can explore the thick forests.  It is one of the most popular diving locations in North America and might just be the best diving spot on the west coast of the continent.
